AGES Society Position Statement on Abortion
8th July 2025
The Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES) affirms that access to abortion is a fundamental health care right.
As leaders in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, we recognise that safe, timely, and equitable abortion care is essential to protecting the health, autonomy, and well-being of patients.
Restricting access to abortion leads to increased medical risks, worsened health outcomes, and greater disparities in care, particularly for vulnerable populations.
AGES stands with healthcare professionals in advocating for policies that ensure comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion, as a critical component of ethical and equitable medical practice.
The AGES Board supports a First Nations Voice to Parliament
On October 14th 2023 the Australian public will be asked to vote in the referendum to recognise First Nation Peoples in the Constitution by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.
First Nations people have and continue to experience significant health disparities in Australia, especially within women’s healthcare. The AGES Board considers the establishment of an Indigenous Voice to Parliament a valuable pathway towards meaningful consultation and collaboration with Indigenous communities in shaping policies that impact their health and well-being.
In supporting an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, the AGES Board joins RANZCOG, RACS, ANZCA and other medical colleges and societies.
Roe v Wade
27th June 2022
AGES joins with the numerous gynaecological societies and women’s health advocacy groups worldwide in expressing its extreme disappointment at the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v Wade decision.
AGES agrees that reproductive healthcare is a fundamental human right.
All women everywhere must have reproductive choice and access to abortion care.
In Australia and New Zealand, after years of abortion law reform and abortion decriminalisation, we are fortunate to have abortion services available to all women.
This US Supreme Court decision is a reminder that no human right can be taken for granted.
We, as a civil society, must remain vigilant in our commitment to reproductive choice for all women.
Always.
